We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team at the UTD office in Almelo, Netherlands. As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for delivering Conceptual and Basic Design (Front-End Engineering Design) for new builds or modifications of production facilities. You will collaborate closely with the Senior Engineer Mechanical, contributing to design development, specifications, and substantiation. Additionally, you will provide valuable input to the Plant Safety Case and contribute to the development of Plant Design concepts. This includes conducting feasibility studies and exploring the best available technologies to support Urenco’s design delivery.

At Urenco, we are committed to providing opportunities for growth and development. If you meet most, but not all, of the qualifications, we encourage you to apply. We are dedicated to nurturing the potential of our people and offer world-class training, mentoring, and development experiences.

What you’ll do:

Safety Culture Promotion: Actively advocate for a proactive safety culture and conduct analysis to foster a learning-from-experience approach.
Plant Design & Safety: Ensure that plant designs incorporate safety features, based on best industrial practices and lessons learned from the nuclear industry.
Mechanical Design Engineering: Contribute to the determination of mechanical design aspects, options, and evaluations for feasibility/optioneering/best technology studies.
Conceptual Design & Specifications: Support the delivery of Conceptual Design and Design Specifications with a focus on mechanical systems and equipment.
Basic Design Support: Assist in the development of Basic Design packages for Core Plant Technology (CPT) and Utility Systems (e.g., HVAC, GEVS, compressed air, cooling water) as they pertain to mechanical systems.
Oversight of Detailed Design: Provide guidance and oversight for Detailed Design and supplier manufacturing processes as requested by site or group project managers.
Core Plant & Utility Systems Expertise: Maintain and define expertise for Core Plant Technology (CPT) and Utility systems, ensuring compliance with Urenco’s best safety practices and cutting-edge technologies.
Design & Safety Case Standards: Establish, control, and maintain Group Reference Design and safety case standards, including core UF6 enrichment systems (pumps, valves, stations) and critical utility systems in support of UTD activities.
Post Implementation Reviews: Contribute to Post Implementation Reviews in the P&M expertise area to ensure continuous improvement based on safety, compliance, operational, and asset management feedback.

What You’ll Need to Thrive in This Role:

Educational Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Process Technology, Nuclear, or Mechanical Engineering. Alternatively, equivalent qualifications in combination with a Professional Engineer (PE) license obtained through accredited examination in relevant areas.
Relevant Experience: Recognised experience within the mechanical engineering or design field, particularly in the nuclear or industrial sectors.
Problem Solving & Analysis: Demonstrated ability to analyse and model complex technical design issues, developing advanced design solutions.
Engineering Expertise: Proven experience in design and engineering, particularly with complex systems and equipment.
What We Offer You

Challenging Role with Career Growth:
Take on an exciting role with great opportunities for personal and professional development.
Competitive Salary:
A starting salary between €4,800 and €6,500 gross per month, based on experience.
Work-Life Balance:
Flexible hours, hybrid working options, and 38.5 days of annual leave (full-time).
Attractive Benefits Package:
Includes 8% holiday pay, 4% mid-year bonus, 3% year-end bonus, performance-based bonus, and contribution to collective health insurance.
Sustainability Commitment:
Working towards CO2-neutrality by 2040, with opportunities to contribute ideas.
Social Activities:
Fun outings and events organised by our staff association to build community.
Volunteering Opportunities:
Engage in meaningful volunteer work to make a positive impact.
Focus on Well-being:
Initiatives to promote a healthy lifestyle, balance, and job satisfaction to help you become a KERNgezonde version of yourself.

Neurodiversity in Semiconductor Careers: Turning Different Thinking into a Superpower

Semiconductors sit quietly at the heart of everything: phones, cars, medical devices, satellites, data centres & everyday appliances. Behind every chip are people designing circuits, running fabs, testing wafers, modelling devices & solving problems most users never see. Those people are not all “textbook” engineers – & that’s a good thing. If you’re neurodivergent (for example living with ADHD, autism or dyslexia), you may have been told your brain is “too distracted”, “too literal” or “too disorganised” for a high-precision, high-reliability industry. In reality, many of the traits that made school or traditional offices hard can be huge strengths in semiconductor work: intense focus on detail, pattern-spotting in test data, creative thinking around yield & process issues. This guide is written for semiconductor job seekers in the UK. We’ll cover: What neurodiversity means in a semiconductor context How ADHD, autism & dyslexia strengths map to chip & fab roles Workplace adjustments you can ask for under UK law How to talk about your neurodivergence in applications & interviews By the end, you should have a clearer sense of where you might thrive in the semiconductor industry – & how to turn “different thinking” into a genuine career advantage.

Semiconductor Hiring Trends 2026: What to Watch Out For (For Job Seekers & Recruiters)

As we move into 2026, the semiconductor jobs market is in that awkward phase of being both overheated and cautious. Global chip demand is booming again, driven by AI, data centres, automotive, defence, 5G and consumer electronics. Fab capacity is set to hit record highs as new plants come online worldwide. At the same time, we are seeing: Waves of investment and hiring in some regions and companies. Restructuring and layoffs in others, as firms rebalance portfolios and chase AI margins. A deepening global skills shortage, with forecasts of major shortfalls in engineers and technicians by 2030. For the UK, the sector is small but strategically vital. The National Semiconductor Strategy, public funding and participation in European chip programmes are all aimed at building domestic capability in design, compound semiconductors and advanced manufacturing. So what does all this mean for semiconductor jobs in 2026 – and for employers trying to recruit in a brutally competitive market?

Semiconductor Recruitment Trends 2025 (UK): What Job Seekers Need To Know About Today’s Hiring Process

Summary: UK semiconductor hiring has shifted from credentials & tool lists to capability‑driven evaluation that emphasises shipped silicon, yield/reliability gains, verification coverage, DFM/DFT maturity, robust bring‑up, safe/efficient fab operations and measurable business impact (PPM, YMS wins, time‑to‑yield, test cost, opex). This guide explains what’s changed, what to expect in interviews and how to prepare—especially for RTL/ASIC/SoC, analog/mixed‑signal/RF, verification, physical design, DFT/ATPG, product/test, failure analysis & reliability, process/device, equipment/maintenance, EHS, supply chain & operations roles. Who this is for: Digital design & verification engineers, PD & timing closure, analog/mixed‑signal/RF designers, DFT/ATPG/BIST, STA/PDN/SI/PI specialists, product/test engineers (ATE/DFT), yield/reliability & FA, device/process (FEOL/BEOL), equipment & facilities, EHS/compliance, supply‑chain/outsourcing (OSAT/Foundry), and programme/product managers across the UK semicon ecosystem.
