This is a fantastic opportunity for a senior mechanical design engineer with a background in the design of high precision, mechatronic or electromechanical equipment to work on the design and development of innovative data storage systems and components. The company has a working prototype but this now needs to be optimised to unlock the true performance and potential of the product.

This role sits within a young start up business so candidates who thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, who are not afraid of change or challenging the status quo would do very well.

It would suit a mechanical design / mechatronics engineer who loves to push the boundaries of technology, develop new ideas and develop robust & reliable solutions.

Your Role: Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

  • Work alongside physicists, electronics design and material scientists to design high precision electromechanical enclosures & internal component design integration such as bearings, motors, actuators etc.

  • Lead & own technical projects and teams with responsibility for the delivery of high precision, electromechanical / mechatronic products

  • Optimisation of existing designs & assemblies to improve efficiency and accuracy of parts

  • Investigate and mitigate mechanical or control issues in the system

  • Get hands on with prototype build, testing and refining designs in a lab-based environment

  • Attend or lead design reviews, present to customers and lead mechanical design & continuous improvement projects

Your Background: Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

  • Degree in mechanical / optomechanical / electromechanical / mechatronics engineering or Physics

  • Proven mechanical design of high precision mechanisms, complex assemblies, fibre optic or laser systems, electronics packaging, scientific instruments, semiconductor equipment, medical devices, robotics, electric motors, satellites, prosthetics, automation etc.

  • Ability to lead projects and project teams through various design cycles

  • Ability to demonstrate original thinking and an innovative approach to problem solving, from top-level concept to piece-part design

  • Solid practical engineering skills to build and test prototypes, take systems apart and make improvements

  • Good experience in Design for manufacture (DFM), GD&T, BOM creation etc.

  • Knowledge of manufacturing techniques – precision machining, casting, sheetmetal or precision fabrication

  • Strong 3D CAD skills with either SolidWorks, Creo, Inventor, Catia V5, SolidEdge etc.

  • Energetic and enthusiastic personality with strong communication skills to manage own projects or support other members across the business and group

  • Knowledge of design for thermal, vibration or shock would be desirable

  • An appreciation of microcontrollers (Arduino, STM32, Raspberry Pi) or C/C++ firmware development would be desirable

As a thank you for your support, the company offers share options, holidays, pension and opportunities to progress and develop your career.

This is an onsite role commutable from Slough, Reading, Staines, Basingstoke, Woking, Camberley, High Wycombe and is in easy reach of the M4 or M3
