Senior C&I Engineer - Reactor Protection System

Location: Derby or Warrington / Hybrid

Salary: £48,000 - £62,500 + Excellent benefits

We are Rolls-Royce SMR and we're doing something that's never been done before. We're revolutionising an industry. That's a once-in-a-career opportunity for those excited by such a challenge.

This is more than just a job this is a legacy.

We are now recruiting for a Senior C&I Engineer - RPS to be involved in delivering an industry leading, cutting-edge design project for a new type of nuclear power station.

What we're looking for:

As a Senior C&I Engineer - RPS, you will provide technical expertise across the lifecycle of hardwired protection and accident management systems for the SMR nuclear power plant 'reactor island'.

This covers the delivery of the complete design of the systems, spanning requirements gathering, development of system architecture, sub-system design and equipment specification, and design / selection to realise the final verified design of the systems in support of the overall design of the power station.

You will do this by working closely with the engineering teams from across the reactor island and applying a structured systems engineering approach to design.

Working with Plant Process Engineers and other C&I Engineers to gather and develop system requirements.
Translate these requirements into design specifications for the hardwired protection and accident management systems.
Assess and substantiate that the design specification meets the requirements.
Ensure that the design is compliant against international standards in particular, IEC61508 & IEC61503.
Liaise with other disciplines to understand functional performance capabilities of components and systems to facilitate effective system design.
Support to planning and implementation of policies and procedures related to the life cycle of the systems.
Ensure that optimum solutions are provided for the RR SMR Nuclear Power Plant by supporting the procurement, operations, and maintenance aspects of the equipment.
Contribute to the production of safety cases and provide support in liaising with regulators and independent nuclear safety assessors.
As we strive to find the best fit for this position, we are seeking individuals with a minimum level of experience, training, and qualification. But we'll let you in on a secret: there's no such thing as the 'perfect' candidate. If you feel you meet 75% of the requirements for this role, we would love to hear from you.

Key selection criteria for this role are:

Comprehensive C&I System Design Proficiency - Knowledge and experience in the systematic design lifecycle of C&I systems including specification, design, assessment, verification, testing, installation, commissioning and maintenance of safety or process critical C&I systems. This together with a good understanding of the principles of designing systems to be functionally resilient to faults (such as redundancy and diversity) would be beneficial.
Adherence to Industry Standards - Knowledge and experience of relevant industry standards for systems important to safety (e.g. IEC 61508, IEC 61503).
Application of Advanced System Methodologies - Knowledge and experience of applying systems engineering methodologies including Model Based Systems Engineering to C&I systems.
Effective Stakeholder Communication - Experience in taking information, understanding, and presenting it in an appropriate and compelling format, which includes formal communications to the appropriate stakeholders.
Technical Oversight Proficiency - The ability to provide technical oversight of the work carried out by supply chain partners i.e., discharging the intelligent customer role.

Training & Qualification Requirements

Hold a degree level qualification in one or more of the engineering disciplines of electrical, electronics, instrumentation, control systems.
Applicants without a degree who can nevertheless demonstrate suitable experience may also be considered.

Pay and benefits

We anticipate paying a salary of between £48,000 - £62,500 (DOE) plus:-

A performance related bonus of up to 12.5%,
An attractive pension scheme with 12% employer and 6% employee contributions.
You will also receive a flexible benefits allowance of £2,200, enabling you to create a bespoke package to suit your needs.
28 days annual leave (plus bank holiday) with ability to buy additional days.
BUPA personal health cover.
£250 one-off cash allowance on joining to spend on your home-office set-up.

Rural-Remote Semiconductor Jobs: Innovation Beyond Urban Borders

A Fresh Outlook for Semiconductor Professionals Mention semiconductor jobs and many people instantly visualise state-of-the-art fabrication plants (fabs), sterile cleanrooms, and corporate campuses in or near big tech cities. While it’s true that silicon chips do require advanced manufacturing sites, the shift towards remote work—amplified by digital collaboration tools, cloud-based design systems, and global talent needs—now enables many roles in the semiconductor sector to exist beyond traditional urban technology corridors. At SemiconductorJobs.co.uk, we’re seeing an uptick in opportunities for professionals seeking “tech jobs by the sea” or “semiconductor remote countryside” positions. Newer tools and processes allow chip designers, EDA (Electronic Design Automation) specialists, and supply chain coordinators, among others, to operate from locations they prefer—be that a scenic rural hamlet or a rugged coastal town. The quest for a balanced, more affordable life is drawing highly skilled chip engineers, application developers, and managers out of city centres and into the UK’s picturesque regions. If you’ve ever pictured finishing a complex circuit design review, then stepping outside to rolling hills or the sound of ocean waves, this article is for you. Read on to discover why rural or coastal living doesn’t mean sacrificing cutting-edge career prospects, how to navigate potential challenges, and how to find (or create) your dream rural-remote semiconductor role.
