About us

Material Evolution is a materials technology company founded in 2020 by Dr. Liz Gilligan and Sam Clark. Headquartered in Middlesbrough, in 2024 we commissioned the UK’s largest ultra-low-carbon cement factory in Wrexham.

We exist to solve one of the world’s toughest climate problems. As a team of scientists, engineers, and commercial and operational experts, we’re rethinking how essential materials are made; starting with cement, an industry responsible for around 8% of global CO2 emissions.

Backed by leading impact and technology investors, we’re on a mission to rapidly and radically decarbonise industrial materials. If you’re motivated by real-world impact and want to work close to the heart of a purpose-driven business, you’ll feel at home here.

About the Role

This is a 6-12mo fixed term contract (FTC)

Material Evolution is looking for a Process Engineer to help design, optimise, and scale our core production processes. This role sits at the intersection of engineering, operations, and product development, ensuring our manufacturing systems run efficiently, reliably, and at scale.

You will work closely with R&D, operations, and external partners to translate process concepts into robust industrial systems. The ideal candidate enjoys solving complex technical problems and improving processes through data, experimentation, and engineering insight.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and operate manufacturing and production processes
  • Support scale-up from lab or pilot processes to full-scale production
  • Analyse process performance using data, experimentation, and engineering analysis
  • Identify and implement improvements to efficiency, quality, and throughput
  • Develop process documentation, SOPs, and technical specifications
  • Work with equipment suppliers and contractors on process design, procurement, and installation
  • Support on-site commissioning and start-up of new plants, pilot facilities, or process upgrades, including system testing, performance validation, and troubleshooting during ramp-up
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including R&D, product, and operations
  • Ensure processes meet safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements
  • Drive a culture of continuous improvement
  • Travel to pilot plants, manufacturing facilities, or partner sites as required to support installation, commissioning, and process ramp-up activities

Requirements

  • Degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline
  • Experience in process design, optimisation, or industrial operations
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Experience working with process data, experimentation, and troubleshootingFamiliarity with industrial equipment, process systems, and manufacturing environments
  • Ability to work in fast-moving, cross-functional teams
  • Experience operating a production plant

Desirable

  • Experience with scale-up from pilot to commercial production
  • Experience in materials, cement, chemicals, or manufacturing industries
  • Experience in plant commissioning projects
  • Familiarity with contractor management and on-site supervision
  • Experience within heavy industry, manufacturing, construction, or process environments
  • Working knowledge of change-control, HAZOP, or industrial safety systems

Benefits

At Material Evolution, we provide everything you need to perform at your best. Our rewards, benefits, and initiatives are designed to support your career growth, enhance your well-being, and contribute positively to our community.

Along with a competitive salary, we offer an outstanding benefits package, including 25 days holiday (plus an extra day for your birthday), access to a learning & development budget and social events. New Semiconductor Employers to Watch in 2026: UK and International Companies Transforming Chip Careers

The semiconductor industry is entering a new era of investment, geopolitical significance, and technological innovation. As advanced chips power everything from artificial intelligence and edge computing to autonomous vehicles and 5G infrastructure, demand for skilled professionals across design, verification, fabrication, and test engineering continues to rise. For professionals exploring opportunities on www.SemiconductorJobs.co.uk , understanding which employers are scaling, raising funds, winning contracts, or establishing UK operations is critical. This article highlights the new semiconductor employers to watch in 2026, including UK innovators, major international players expanding locally, and emerging firms driving next‑generation semiconductor technologies.

How Many Semiconductor Tools Do You Need to Know to Get a Semiconductor Job?

If you’re pursuing a career in the semiconductor industry, it can feel like you’re expected to master an endless list of tools, software packages and lab equipment before you even submit a CV. One job advert wants experience with TCAD and process simulation, another mentions SPICE and yield tools, while yet another asks for test automation platforms, yield analysis software, hardware description languages, EDA suites and hundreds of others. With so many technical names thrown around, it’s easy to fall into “tool anxiety” — the feeling that you’re behind because you don’t know every piece of software, every lab instrument and every process control suite. Here’s the honest truth most semiconductor hiring managers won’t say out loud: 👉 They don’t hire you because you know every tool — they hire you because you can use the right tools to solve real engineering problems and explain your reasoning clearly. Tools matter, absolutely. But they exist to help you deliver measurable results — not to be collected like badges. So how many semiconductor tools do you actually need to know to get a job? The answer is a lot fewer than you might think — and far more focused on core capabilities than a long checklist. This guide breaks down what employers really value, which tools are essential, which are role-specific, and how to focus your learning so you are confident and credible.

What Hiring Managers Look for First in Semiconductor Job Applications (UK Guide)

The semiconductor industry is fast-moving, highly technical and critically important to modern technology. Whether you’re targeting roles in device design, process engineering, yield improvement, test and validation, equipment engineering, reliability, failure analysis or fab operations, hiring managers are selective and deliberate in how they review applications. Most candidates still make the same mistake: they throw generic skill lists and duty statements at recruiters and hope it sticks. In reality, hiring managers make an early call — often within the first 10–20 seconds — based on a few key signals that tell them whether you’re a credible, relevant, impactful candidate. This article breaks down exactly what hiring managers look for first in semiconductor job applications — how they scan your CV, portfolio and cover letter, what makes them read deeper, and what causes strong candidates to be passed over in favour of others.
