It's a locally managed and flexed informal discretionary arrangement. As a minimum we're all expected to attend the workplace for collaboration and other specific reasons, on average three days per week.

What you will be doing:
Acting as a technical PoC for power electronic systems involved with AC to DC, DC to AC, DC to DC conversion and solid-state power controllers.
Developing optimum power electronic solutions to suit the requirements of the wider electrical power system, considering the characteristics and requirements of the energy sources and loads. This will include consideration of power quality, EMC and protection aspects of the electrical power system and the interaction of the constituent parts.
Taking full ownership of specific solutions and approaches from their concept stage through to design, testing and final installation to satisfy the associated requirements. This will include a range of disciplines including electrical, thermal and mechanical aspects of the design.
Presenting the power electronic solutions at appropriate design review gates as the design and development activities progress. Where necessary interfacing with both internal and external customers.
Driving new and innovative approaches to improve on existing traditional methods wherever possible. The capture of intellectual property and directing longer term research activities at the company's university technology centres are essential aspects of the role.
Working in the power electronics team offering expert advice and mentoring younger power electronics engineers. Working across teams where necessary to ensure an optimum system solution and knowledge share.
Keeping a watching brief on the latest developments in power electronics technology including semiconductor devices, gate driver technology and control methods to ensure Rolls-Royce maintains its competitive edge.
Liaising with the wider international power electronics community including the global community of practice group to share knowledge and to support the development of common standards and design guidelines.

What we're looking for:

Being a part of Rolls-Royce you'll know we embrace agility, are bold, pursue collaboration and seek simplicity in everything we do. These principles form our values and behaviours and are an essential component of our assessment process and are fundamental qualities that we seek for all roles.

• At least 5 years of experience in the development, design, implementation and verification of power electronic systems.

• Working knowledge of domain plant and platform interfaces, component technology and behaviour during normal and abnormal operation, verification vehicles, electrical design, system architecture, development process constraints. This will include an appreciation of power dense rotating electrical machines and battery energy storage systems.

• Direct experience of the modelling and simulation tools used for designing and developing power electronic conversion systems operating within a multi-converter electrical power system.

• Demonstratable experience of PCB design using Altium and/or Cadence would be an advantage.

• A working appreciation of associated engineering disciplines; University degree, higher degree or equivalent.

• Good time management skills able to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment. Dynamically respond to evolving objectives and emerging opportunities while working in coordination with a multidisciplinary, energetic team of engineers and scientists

• Able to research application issues and products by being outward focussed and able to seek solutions/information from outside of immediate area, including suppliers, universities, customers, related industries

• Able to train people to improve the capability of the business within a specific area of the business and deliver training material where required

We are an equal opportunities employer. We're committed to developing a diverse workforce and an inclusive working environment. We believe that people from different backgrounds and cultures give us different perspectives which are crucial to innovation and problem solving. We believe the more diverse perspectives we have, the more successful we'll be.
