Job Description

The Opportunity

We are seeking aSenior Optical Test Engineer to join our Test Engineering team at our St Asaph site. This role is critical to supporting New Product Introduction (NPI), sustaining production, and driving continuous improvement across optical test processes and equipment.

You will work closely with Optical Design, Manufacturing, Quality, and Operations teams to ensure optical products meet demanding performance, quality, and regulatory requirements in a high‑reliability engineering environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, execute, and maintain optical test methods and procedures to verify product performance against specification
  • Provide hands‑on test support to NPI and production, including fault finding, root cause analysis, and corrective action
  • Own and improve optical test equipment, including calibration, reliability, and obsolescence management
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives such as test time reduction, process robustness, and yield improvement
  • Interface proactively with Operations to identify and mitigate test‑related risks
  • Generate and maintain technical documentation, test reports, and compliance evidence
  • Ensure all test activities comply with company procedures, Health & Safety, and regulatory requirements
  • Support and mentor junior engineers and technicians within the test function

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Degree (or equivalent experience) in Physics, Optical Engineering, Photonics, or a related discipline
  • Practical experience in optical testing or metrology within a manufacturing environment
  • Strong understanding of optical principles (imaging, alignment, aberrations, tolerancing)
  • Experience troubleshooting complex optical systems and test setups
  • Ability to work effectively across multi‑disciplinary engineering and operations teams
  • Clear technical communication and structured problem‑solving skills

Desirable

  • Experience supporting NPI programmes and stage‑gate reviews
  • Familiarity with optical test equipment (e.g. interferometry, MTF, alignment benches)
  • Experience in regulated or high‑reliability sectors (Aerospace, Defence, Medical, Automotive)
  • Knowledge of test automation or data analysis tools
